1 - Prepare the file
- Use the list of documents requested by the Ministry of the Interior for the declaration of French nationality by parent or grandparent of French.
- All foreign language documents must be translated into French by a certified translator (see list for your region).

- If you live in Paris, contact the bureau des naturalisations de la préfecture de police.
- If you live in another department, consult the website of the prefecture of your department to know the correct regional naturalization platform to contact.
- Cost: €55, paid with tax stamps purchased in a tobacco shop or at the tax center.
3 - After the application
Steps
- If your file is complete, you will receive a receipt.
- You will have an appointment at the prefecture.
- The decision shall be made within a maximum period of one year.
Positive decision
- If the decision is positive, your declaration is formally registered, and you become French beginning on the date of registration of your declaration.
- The prefecture gives you a copy of the declaration, along with proof of registration.
Negative decision
- If you have a negative decision, and if you wish to appeal, we advise you to contact a lawyer (contact details of the lawyers on the website of the National Bar Council -CNB-).
