Groupe d’entraide1 - Prepare the file
- All foreign language documents must be translated into French by a certified translator (see a list of translators in your region).
- Use the list of documents requested by the Ministry of Justice for the declaration of French nationality:
2 - Apply
- Contact the Registry of the tribunal de grande instance (district court) of your domicile.
- Before 16 years of age, your parents must make the declaration for you, but your agreement is mandatory.
- From 16 years of age, you can make the declaration without the agreement of your parents.
3 - After the application
Steps
- If the file is complete, you will receive a receipt.
- The registry has 6 months to register your declaration, or to refuse it.
- 6 months of silence/no response means that the decision is positive.
Positive decision
- If the decision is positive, your declaration is officially registered. You are French beginning on the date of your declaration.
Negative decision
- If the decision is negative, you will receive a letter explaining the reasons for the refusal.
- You have 6 months to appeal to the tribunal de grande instance of your domicile.
- If you wish to appeal, we advise you to contact a lawyer (contact details of the lawyers on the website of the National Bar Council -CNB-).
